A while back I dressed up as a cosplaying JRR Tolkien as part of an awesome multi-art Literary Roast of sacred cow authors. It was a pretty rad time. On 9/15 we do it all again and this time I’ll become…Cormac McCarthy!!!
It’s about to get real.
Check out the awesome trailer for the event:

So this was pretty fun to do. Part of the amazing Literary Roast organized by Weird Love Productions. In this multi-media show all sorts of Boston-area artists (poets, dancers, comics, burlesque performers, etc) were tasked with taking a literary sacred cow of their choice down a peg. I chose J.R.R. Tolkien and revealed his little-discussed achievement of being the man who “Invented Cosplay!!!”. Good times. I spent a lot of time crafting that wizard staff…it was worth it. Gandalf Lives!
P.S. Here’s an unrelated playlist that I made for Tolkien as part of my series for the blog section of The Missouri Review.

So that Literary Roast thing that I did ended up being damn fun. Like…a lot. I got my geek on, saw some incredibly talented performers, and comically ribbed/celebrated J.R.R. Tolkien, the scribe of Middle Earth himself, as “The Inventor of Cosplay!” ‘Twas a delightful time.
So much so in fact that I was inspired to select Tolkien as the latest passenger in my every-other-week blog column for The Missouri Review wherein I choose a literary notable (poetry or prose, living or dead) and curate/comment on the “perfect playlist” for picking them up from the airport. I’m not 100% certain that Tolkien would dig Mariah Carey, Blackalicious, & the soundtrack to The Matrix Revolutions as much as I think he would, but dammit I’m sticking to it!

And, for a more pensive version of me in high-fantasy land:
